Ration Card

Ration card is a document issued by the State Government of india which serves as a proof of nationality. It is an important document which not only serves as an identity proof but also indicates an individual’s economic status. Under the National Food Security Act, all state governments in India have to identify households that are eligible to purchase subsidized grains from the public distribution system and provide them ration cards.

There are two types of ration cards under NFSA:

Priority Ration Card

Priority ration cards are issued to such families who meet the eligibility criteria set by their state government. Each priority household is entitled to 5 kg of food grains per member per month.

Antyodaya (AAY) Ration Card

These Antyodaya ration cards are issued to the poorest of the poor families. Each AAY household is entitled to 35 kg of food grains per month.

Before NFSA came into force, there were three types of ration cards

Above Poverty Line (APL) Ration Card

These ration cards were issued to families living above the poverty line (as estimated by the Planning Commission). These families received 15 kg of foodgrains (depending on availability).

Ration Cards issued to families living below the poverty line

Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration cards. These families received 25–35 kg of food grains.

Antyodaya (AAY) ration cards that were issued to "poorest of the poor" families. These families received 35 kg of food grains.
